Scent of the Day: Sniffing Out Enrichment at The Bark

At The Bark in Knoxville, TN, we believe enrichment at doggy daycare isn’t just about physical activity—it’s about engaging the senses, too. That’s why we’ve introduced a “Scent of the Day” to our daycare experience, giving dogs a chance to sniff, explore, and enjoy new aromas in their environment.

Why Scent Enrichment Matters

Dogs experience the world primarily through their noses. A sniff for them is like reading a story—rich with details and stimulation. Introducing new scents in a controlled, positive way provides mental exercise, reduces stress, and taps into their natural instincts. It’s an easy but powerful way to give your dog a brain workout.

Our Featured Scents

We rotate through a few carefully chosen scents known for their calming and enriching properties:

  • Rosemary: Stimulating and fresh, this scent can help sharpen focus and boost mood.
  • Ginger: Warm and grounding, ginger may help with anxiety.
  • Chamomile: Famous for its soothing effects, this scent can promote calm and relaxation.
  • Bergamot: Light and citrusy, bergamot has been shown to relieve tension and uplift spirits.

How We Use It

Each day, our team selects a scent to introduce in our play areas. We may diffuse it lightly in scent-mark sniff stations where dogs can explore at their own pace. Everything is safe, gentle, and designed with dogs’ wellbeing in mind.

Enrichment That Goes Beyond Fetch

We love giving dogs more than just a run around the yard. Scent enrichment helps them feel more relaxed, fulfilled, and balanced—and a calmer dog means a happier household at home, too. The next time you drop your pup off at daycare, ask them what the scent of the day is… we’re pretty sure they’ll have a lot to say!
